As can be expected, the CDC has some excellent materials on COVID-19 and workplaces. One piece we want to highlight is the SARS-CoV-2 Testing Strategy: Considerations for Non-Healthcare Workplaces. There are a number of excellent strategies to consider in this piece including:

• Categories of Testing
• Testing individuals with signs or symptoms consistent with COVID-19
• Testing asymptomatic individuals with recent known or suspected exposure to SARS-CoV-2 to control transmission
• Testing asymptomatic individuals without known or suspected exposure to SARS-CoV-2 for early identification in special settings
• Testing to determine resolution of infection

But the area we want to focus on is the simplest one: “Testing individuals with signs or symptoms consistent with COVID-19”. Now in this section the CDC mentions Employee Health Checks (or Employee Screening). Employee Health Checks can come in a number of forms, including questionnaire screening. The CDC says “Employers may consider conducting daily in-person or virtual health checks (e.g., symptom and/or temperature screening) to identify employees with signs or symptoms consistent with COVID-19 before they enter a facility”.

This is an important point because an employee screening or health check before they come into the work facility can reduce the spread of Covid-19 to other workers. This is an important step in keeping a workplace safe, in limiting the health risk in your workplace, and by limiting the Covid-19 health risk, you limit a businesses liability (see Fisher and Phillips article on this “Troubling Pattern of Covid-19 Litigation Begins to Emerge).
